no more playful maltese

nise Jul 05, 2007 11:35 PM

Hi everyone! I hope you all had a blessed 4th of July. I have a question that i hope someone can give me some insight on. I have a 2 y/o maltese who is not spayed yet and went into her 2nd heat about 5 weeks ago. After her 1st heat she was just fine and returned back to her normal, crazy, hyper and lovable little girl. This time has been very different. She no longer seems to have an interest in running and playing like she used to and walks away from her training that she used to love! I took her to the vet and they checked everything and did a full blood panel on her and everything checked out. She did gain a few pounds from being inactive and seems to even be getting into somewhat of a depressed state. She is not pregnant. I know some of you are asking why i did not have her spayed yet. She has a medical condition that i needed some professional and specialist's opinions on before the surgery. Has anyone ever had a female change like this on them due to a heat cycle? Thanks everyone!

Just wondering about the blood panel. If they are looking for one thing another could be easily missed. I have a dog that was recently diagnosed as hypothyroid and the conditions you mention with your dog are similar... weight gain, lethargic, etc. Depression can also be a sign of low thyroid. Do you know if your vet tested for thyroid values?

I had never thought about hypothyroidism.....thank you! I will definately look into that now. I dont think this vet checked for anything like that. I really appreciate your reply. My dog means the world to me and i hate to see her anything but healthy and happy. God bless.

Heat cycles can change behavior- your dog is getting older and more mature. Some can be more drastic than others. False pregnancies can happen as well. Keep an eye on her and work with your vet. Mood changes sometimes indicate complications and/or pain.

Thank you for your reply. I just got off the phone with her vets office again and scheduled another visit for a thyroid panel and i will ask about a possible false pregnancy too. Thank you again!

Just wondering how things are progressing? Has she been back to the vet office?

I have been in contact with their office several times and scheduled another appointment for this week. They are going to do a thyroid panel on her this time. I explained more of her symptoms to them over the phone and they agreed hypothyroid could be a possible reason. Thank you for asking and again for your advise. I will let you know how things go.
