Worried about the size of my Dobe

sunnyjim Jul 16, 2007 06:30 AM

Hi,

My doberman grew well as a puppy and by 8 months he was nearly 30kg (66 pounds) from what i remember. He is now comming up to 1 year and 5 months and still weighs this much. He is fairly short for a male doberman. 25 inches up to the withers. Males are expected to be 26 to 28 inches. From what i know he will not grow any taller. But a male doberman should weigh approx 40 kg (more if they are large dobe's). Should i just increase his feed until he is 2 years old? And how much more should i expect to see him grow? His parents were large. His father is a lot bigger.

Thanks.

Dobermans do take some time to fill out around that age. I'm guessing he'll add some bulk to his frame still. It's fairly common to have a dog not meet the height requirement for a breed even though they are a purebred. Most breeders try to avoid it, but it happens even to the best of them on occation. Have you discussed this with your dog's breeder? What were the dog's parents like? Grandparents?

His grandparents are very big. His grandad is even bigger than his father.

hi sunny, my first dobe came to me in 1979 as the scarecrow lol, i was 19 yrs old and he was 9 months old, weighing barely 76lbs, 26" tall, with one ear up and one down, very thin, bony and roach backed looking, he was an unruly brat, but with a heart of pure gold! i had first seen him as a stocky 5month old pup weighing a solid 55lbs at one of my puppy obedience training classes then he spent the next few months in his owners garage because they chose not to be "cruel"(ha ha) and crate him.so instead he ate the house and garage daily and got no excersize because if he got off the leash he was goneee like the windd. i heard about a "crazy" doberman needing a new home thru the grape vine and went and got my very first doberman pinscher, Smoke,
who became the love of my live and best friend for the next 10 yrs. he grew to 29" 1/2" tall, weighed 109lbs of awesome dobie muscle. i switched him to purina puppy chow and 24/7 free roaming on 100+ acres. all that dog did was run for a solid week before he figured out he was permanently outta "jail" lol
over the next 8 years we trained on to become DESANTI"S
"Sir Smokey of the Springs f.d." C.D. Bh WH AD ScHA ScH1. he could have gone on and on but i puttered out, not him. he died at 10 1/2 years old, quietly drifted off to sleep the day after we came home from a fun match watching a couple of his kids kickin butt, taking the old mans place and making us all proud!
so, now that you know smoke's story , my answer to you would be a good solid high protein high fat food(dogs thrive on as much as 50% fat in their diet) and as much exercise as humanly possible and watch the growth spurts start them muscles poppin!
