Smelly Carpet!

jenhennessy Jul 16, 2007 10:16 AM

99.9% of the time, my two dogs are completely house trained. But when accidents happen they always happen in the one same spot. Unfortunately it's carpeted area of the house - and the carpet's naturally absorbed the smell. I want to achange the carpet but I'm scared that I'll spend all this money cleaning the area up, changing the carpet, washing down the surrounding furniture with bleach - getting rid of the smell that lures them there - and then following habbit, they start using that spot again as a potty. Anyone ever have this problem? Any ideas for saving my new rug????

Have you used a pet neutralizing cleaner on this spot? A product called Nature's Miracle has worked for me in the past. Regualr cleaners just don't get the smell out. Sometimes on very old or spots that haven't been cleaned up correctly to begin with a couple of applications of neutralizer are needed. If you can smell a pet spot, your pets can smell it a million times better. They will be attracted to the spot.

If you do have to tear out the carpet- I don't think you need to- you will still want ot take the enzyme cleaner after teh spot or the same result will happen because the odar is in the floor boards.

I agree with Chelle. You'll want to use Nature's Miracle to get the smell out. Also watch that area--see if your dog's are sniffing around. If they still seem drawn to the area, I'd put a baby gate up (or crate the dogs) when you're not there.

Nobody fights smelly carpet like I do (unfortunately). I have a 15 year old dog who is both semi bowel and urinary incontinent. Although I have this managed to a science (dog diapers, beds wrapped in plastic, ice cubes on the rear, etc.) accidents do happen -- alot. I also occasionally take care of an unfixed neighbor dog who likes to mark inside the house.

I use Nature's Miracle for all incidents by first blotting up moisture and then soaking the area with Nature's Miracle. I tried something else for a while but that did not work as well and the house began to smell. I liberally applied baking soda (Costco bag size over 15x15 room), let sit overnight and vaccumed in the morning. No smell and house smelled fresh. I had both my smell phobic sister and mom over and they agreed that house smelled good. I am trusting that this also means that my house is not infested with bacteria as the enzymes are supposted to take care of that.
