Can i add another to two Huskies?

aussie86999 Jul 16, 2007 05:43 PM

Hi all i have a 4 year old male nuetered husky and a 18 month old female husky we raised with him since she was eight weeks old. Both have bonded wonderfully with each other and have very loving gentle personalities even though she has always worn the pants between the two.We now are thinking of rescuing another husky to add to them but are worried if we could be jeapardizing the harmony and if not get some advise please.Do we get a male or female? Tips on introduction etc.Even articles on this if possible please. We do get the dog whisperer here on Australian tv but i think i need a bit more experience than that.Or do i just not tempt fate and quit while things are smooth.P.S space isnt a problem as the have about half an acre of land ,always get walked and sleep with us on our bed at night.

Regards Jason.

I personally like male/female combos and I don't mix it up beyond that. I know it can be done though, it's just tough and requires work. How willing are you to put in work and trianing into 3 dogs? Realistically answer that question and go from there.

IF you decide the work is worth it, get a book called "Feeling Outnumbered." I'm not a fan of the Dog whisperer's way of handling multiple dogs- especially with spitz breeds- so I woudl nto use his methods of introduction. Huskies in general do live together fairly well. For my breed I'd rather deal with two males than two females, and from what you say about your two, I'd probably go that route with your next. A VERY dominant female is going to have a harder time accepting another female than another male. Your male will still have to work things out with the newcomer though and so will your female- just not as much.

Many say a puppy is the best way to deal with this as well. In my experience, a neutral older dog was easier to introduce. It kind of all depends on your dogs. I liked having an older dog come in that had a clue about dog language. Puppies are obnoxious and just don't know when to leave an older dog alone. Granted puppies are just harder overall.

So, it can be done, just make sure to be smart about it, use neutral territory whenever possible and a very responsible breeder or rescue group would help you a lot in finding the right match.
