How much do standard poodles cost?

lovidentity Jul 24, 2007 01:27 PM

Hello all!
I'm searching around to buy a female white standard poodle puppy, and have contacted about four reputable breeders. The average price seems to be $2000 for a standar poodle puppy. Is this price right, or did I just contact breeders who charge a lot? I was expecting about $1000, but $2000 seems very high to pay for a dog. I understand the diff. btwn getting a dog from a reputable breeder vs. getting one from a backyard breeder or a mill, and would NEVER even consider to get a puppy from the later two...but still! I had NO idea breeders were charging $2000 for a puppy!

Well I think the prices you are looking at may be in the ballpark but there are some variables to consider. Are you looking for a pet quality or show quality dog? Many breeders offer both but will require a show quality dog to be shown. Otherwise a pet quality will be the best choice. I would do a Google search of Poodle breeders in your area or go to the AKC website and click on breeders. Another good resource would be the Poodle Club of America.

Keep in mind that when dealing with reputable breeders that they are making relatively no profit selling their dogs when compared to all of the research and care that they put into their lines. Good Luck with your search.

There are some regional differences in purebred puppy prices around the country. So it's hard to say if $2000 is too much or not.

With that said, $2000 for a pet quality puppy does seem a bit high in my area, yet I do know that poodles have some very expensive genetic health issues that need screening for before being bred so it may be worth it overall. I know I have paid far more than that in vet bills on one of my dogs fixing a genetic defect (that still isn't completely fixed). So if the breeder screens well, sells on a good contract, and is highly respected in the standard poodle world, I'd pay it. Price doesn't always guarantee quality though so ask for references for other buyers in the past (ask for adult dog references) and ask about this breeder's repuation from other breeders. They'll tell you the truth. In fact, attending the next AKC dog show in your area would let you probably see this person's dogs as well as talk with other breeders so you can be more informed.
