Walking nicely on the leash

angel416 Jul 27, 2007 02:03 PM

I recently adopted a lab puppy. She is now 13 weeks old and weighs about 30 lbs. She has a tendency to pull on her leash. i wnet to the feed store and a trainer there sold me a prong collar. He told me that when she pulls on the leash, i should silently, and suddenly change direction while giving a quick jerk to the leash.

So i tried this. She yelped, and changed direction. He said the goal was to get her to focus on me as she walks. However, she's a fairly bright puppy. She figured out pretty quick that pulling yeilds discomfort, so now she lags behind - 2 or 3 feet behind in fact.

Any suggestions as how to correct this? or should I just tug her forward?

The method that I use is "Be a tree". This means that the dog wears a regular buckle collar and when they start pulling, I just stop dead in my tracks and wait. Eventually they will stop pulling and turn to look at me. Then I start walking again. Repeat for quite a few times. Eventually you will go about 10 feet, if you are lucky. Don't rush it, don't let the dog pull at any time without stopping dead. The dog will get the poiint, it doesn't take too long after the first few days. You want the dog to learn to walk with a loose leash.

My suggestion is get a slip collar either soft or chain. Put the dog in a sit position and put the collar all the way up on the neck, Just like you see at dog shows. Just about right behind the ears. Pick a word like WALK and start moving at a quick, but not running pace. Give a very slight jerk on the lead if necessary and say walk. Then keep moving don't stop. Never let the dog get ahead of you.

No puppy should be on a prong collar. If you must use a tool to get your puppy exercised- use a Gentle Leader head collar. Then go to puppy classes and teach your puppy to walk nicely on a leash next to you.
