Is it beneficial to dogs? One a day? I'd heard it was and am giving my dogs one raw egg a day. If it is, please tell me why.

Hi,
I found this information on raw eggs and dogs and it doesn't look like it's a good idea to give them to dogs.
Raw eggs Contain an enzyme called avidin, which decreases the absorption of biotin (a B vitamin). This can lead to skin and hair coat problems. Raw eggs may also contain Salmonella.

Raw egg protein is one of the easiest proteins for a dog to utilize in their body and digest. It's packed full of calories and nutrition- especially with the shell given as well.

Your information was not all wrong. One of my dogs has severe allergies. I feed him a special raw diet. Originally,I mixed a whole egg with his food. He had a lot of gas. Someone told me to only use the yolk. It worked for him...no gas.
I read about Avidin after reading your post. Only the whites contain avidin...made me glad I was not using the whites. It could have been making his allergies worse. So,thanks

I just know the gas stopped, after we discontinued the egg whites. It was so bad we could hardly stay in the room with him.
He also has skin allergies, and I thought Avidin might make him worse. I read about the Avidin restricting the availability of biotin. Biotin can be used to help control itching. Of course I am no expert on the subject, but with his problems, I will try almost anything. The vet had him on Prednisone, which worried me. He is now on Holistic treatment, which seems to be working, but it is slow.
He is a Pharaoh Hound and a great dog.He seems to have more than his share of problems. I would post his picture, but not sure if it's allowed on the mixed breed forum.

Glad things are getting a little better for him, Winona. I guess allergies can be very difficult to treat until you find the culprit but even then there may be more than one thing causing problems as I understand it. So far I've been very lucky with my Shih Tzu Katie and hope it stays that way but you never know.
I don't believe that I've ever seen a Pharaoh hound in person but from the pictures I've seen, they are a beautiful dog. Go ahead and post a picture. I'd love to see it. It will be our little secret and I'll never tell. LOL

Mary Lou...I'm happy Katie doesn't have allergies. Years ago we owned a Shih Tzu who did have allergies.

I like that name, Winona. Don't just lurk on the Shih Tzu board. Next time you're there, say hi. I promise that our little ones won't bite. LOL Poor Katie is so good about having her picture taken. I can almost hear her saying, "Here she comes with that camera again." LOL

Mary Lou-
You didn't give "wrong" information, you gave partial information. And there is a risk of salmonella from raw eggs. So, from your point of view, you are correct. From my point of view, the benefits outweigh the risks and if the egg shells are given with the raw egg, the inital concern about imbalance is not there.

Thanks, Chelle. With all the information about food these days, it's kind of hard to keep everything straight.

I see your points. But I'd been told, long ago, giving a raw aid not only aids nutrition problems, but skin ailments as well. A Chinese guy even recommended this to me too, since my dog's had skin allergies like yours.
But I've heard some say 'just give it the egg-white.' Now you're saying just give it the yoke. I don't know, yet one of my dog's had a little constipation, no gas as far as I know.
I don't think, however, it's detrimental to their health unless, of course, your dog's allergic.
Any more comments?
Hi...Due to food allergies, I worked with a canine nutritionist to plan a diet for this dog. At first we used the entire egg in his food. She has a business...raw dog food, and they use the entire egg, shell included. A Vet.is a consultant for her business. I wasn't worried about giving him the eggs. I did talk to two friends about all the gas. They suggested I try giving him the yolk only. It worked...otherwise I would still be using the entire egg. I know there is a slight risk, but he has never had Salmonella. If your dog doesn't have problems as a result of eating the eggs, I wouldn't worry about feeding them.
