Another question about the PitSenji

patscats Aug 05, 2007 05:19 PM

His name is Nakai, so you know.

When traveling, Nakai is restrained in the back seat of the car. Every time a large vehicle (think anything but a regular car) goes past in the opposite direction, he "attacks" it by lunging at the window while barking and snarling. The only purpose this really serves is to smash his nose into the window, or the wall of the car. He doesn't do this to vehicles traveling *alongside* our car, just ones going in the opposite direction, and normally never a car, but only trucks, jeeps, minivans, etc.

It would seem that this would be painful enough that he would just stop on his own, but he doesn't. Is there anything I can do to correct this behavior? He does travel by car often, and well on all other accounts.

Thanx for your help.

By "restrained" are you saying you are using a seat belt or something along those lines? If not, I'd say try an airline approved crate instead. That limits the dog's view of the outside and can make some of these behaviors go away.

If already in a fairly covered up crate yo uare still getting it, then it's the noise and you are probably dealig with a noise sensitivity. There are many ways to desensitize to noise. I have used a childs DVD with fire trucks and trains at home and given my dog a treat every tiem they didn't react to the noise.

Pitties are notorious for being pain resistant. Im not sure how you are restraining, but crating bullies is always a good idea just in case you get pulled over and a random police officer decides your dog sticking his head out the window to give a kiss is actually a rabid pit bull hell bent on killing him.

If you do not want to crate the dog, I would suggest a seat belt, if you already arent doing that.

Yes, he is on a harness which is clipped to a leash, and secured around a seat belt and its locked clip.

We do not normally drive with a window open that he can stick his head out of. We considered that he might lunge at something and break the window, fall out and be dragged momentarily, and/or be cut by broken glass.

We may try the crate method mentioned.

Thanx!
