Dry Eye care and treatment

jwspearit Aug 08, 2007 12:55 PM

Hi Peke lovers!
We've had 12 of the best PEKINGESE (or they've had us) for 35 years. Have never had such a problem with "dry eye" as with "LIZZIE".....been to the vet several times. Corticosteroid (pred.) prescribed. I've had her tested for tear production which was, of course, down......she dosen't have perferations yet. and I just started HALO EYE WASH...........any good advice out there?
Thanks, jwspearit and LIZZIE.

Hi! I don't have a Peke but just curious what the reading was on the Schirmer tear test? Is there any chance the dry eye condition could be related to a viral infection? Do the eyes seem to be red or painful? When sleeping is she able to completely close her eyelids?

The only long term solution for dry eyes is CYCLOSPORIN which is obtained from a veterinary ophthalmologist.
I have a Peke who has been blind since 9 weeks old and he will be on the Cyclosporin for the duration of his life.
Once he began the drops, all redness and infection cleared.
