After counter surfing and ingesting three pork hide chews on Sunday, Peanut, our 11yr old Pharaoh Hound started with refusing food and being lethargic on Monday. Monday night watery diarrhea started. Tuesday afternoon, the diarrhea was bloody and Peanut was brought in to the emergency vet. On initial exam they were going to send us home with some meds but while there did a test for her red blood cell count. I was told normal was 50 and Peanut was at 63. They decided to keep her overnight and treat her with IV fluids, flagyl and pepsid and see how she took to that. Wednesday, the diarrhea was still bloody, mucusy and now oozing out of her that they had to change the bedding every 15 minutes, xrays were taken but everything looked okay. I visitied her Wednesday night and other than the oozing, Peanut was alert, play-bowing and seemed okay. The bloody, mucusy diarrhea stopped during the night and they offered Peanut some food. Diarrhea came back but no longer bloody. By Thursday afternoon, the talk was to transfer her out of the emergency vet, to our regular vet Friday and hopefully bring her home on Saturday. Friday morning, Peanut vomitted blood. I immediately took her out for an ultra sound which showed a possible obsrtuction in her small intestine. They continued with the IV fluids, did a liver biopsy last night. We have been keeping an eye on her liver enzymes the past couple of years as they are slowly elevating but were actually down with this weeks blood work-ups, we are still waiting this morning for the results. They also did a barium test during the night. Peanut was able to pass the barium through her system, no blockage. The next thought, fromteh emergency vet, is to do exporitory surgery from her esophogus to her colon, taking boipsys of everything. We cannot put Peanut through this. When I was with her on Friday, she just looked too weak, had lost alot of weight and was just too tired.
Is there some sort of holistic remedy we can try to help Peanut?
As of this morning she still had some diarrhea over night and did vomit the baruim but I'm told the vomitting of the barium is common.
