Muscular Myositis

I have an 8-9 yr old rescue German Shorthair who is having jaw pain and difficulty swallowing. Our vet has ordered a muscular myositis test and prednisone treatments. Any experience with treating this disease without steroids and any suggestions of potential things that might mimic myositis?
