I have a 2 1/2 year old Shiba Inu. My friend is giving away her 6 mo old Golden Retriever. We are considering taking the puppy and just want to know if this is a good idea or not.

Hi, my name is Bob and I post on the Shiba Inu forum here with many other wonderful members. When you have time you may want to post the question there for some really great advice. Besides we want to hear more about your Shiba! lol As for the new pup, is your Shiba male or female... what gender is the Golden? The usual rule of thumb with Shibas is a male/female combination, but I have two males and a female and so does another member and it works for us. If the Shiba has been an only dog since you have had him/her, you can make it work with some time and patience. What I would recommend is for you to meet your friend on neutral territory like at a park or a school near you. Have your friend walk the pup up to your Shiba with a method called arcing where you slowly circle and close the gap between the two dogs. Once they are near each other let them get used to one another, then take them for a walk and see how they react. If all goes well, bring the pup to your house and bring them both into the yard with your Shiba going first. After some time bring them into the house, always with your Shiba going first, followed by the pup. For now make sure all food and toys are up off of the floor. Keep the leash attached to both dogs and see how they interact. There may be some grumbling from your Shiba but that is to be expected. Observe both dogs, if they seem to get along arrange for another meeting and then bring both dogs home again. You should be able to see if this would be a good fit for the Shiba. Keep in mind they will always want to be the dominate dog. Good Luck and maybe we will see you on the Shiba board.

If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I want to go where they went.
If the new dog is the opposite gender from the shiba, then it shouldn't be a huge adjustment for all concerned. Shibas are a bit pig headed though, you may want to see their initial reactions to each other on neutral ground before completely sayign yes.
