oliscot Aug 19, 2007 10:04 AM

HI,

I am the proud owner of a 1 year old kelpie cross bitch (Shady). Due to the lack of goods quality comercial dog diets I have deicded to make my own, and have a few qs for you to make sure Im on the right track:

1) Is it true that a dogs diet should be 40 % meat, 30 % grains and 30% v3eggies, or will equal amounts of a wide range of these food be ok as a daily diet?

2) Is it true that all veggies must be cooked as dogs casnnot digest vegetable matter?

3)Is it true that onions ar etoxic to dogs therefore should very be used even in sml amnts

4) I was told by a vet that meat in a homemade diet must be cooked. is this this true?

5)Can codliver oil be used as a daily dietry supplement? If not How oftewn can it be used?

Id appreciate any advice you can give me. Many thanks

Oliver Allen

The diet I recommend consists of mostly raw meat, with some bone meal if the dog doesn't consume reasonable amounts of bone. If you give leftovers and table scraps you have sufficient variety. Onions are not a problem unless you are feeding a diet with onions as the main component. Adding cod liver oil provides essential fatty acids. Cooked vegetables are easier to digest. but it depends on what the dog wants. Grains are not necessary and will tend to make the dog far.
