Feeding concerns

Brandy87 Aug 19, 2007 06:09 PM

A friend recently gave us his Basset Hound and I have been reading about the best care for them. I have run across a cpl websites that say that you should not feed table scraps, that feeding table scraps will cause bloat and could cause death. Is this true because my in-laws are always feeding him scraps even when I ask them not to. And also they feed him a lot of table scraps that have a large amount of garlic and onions. And give him all the fatty drippings off the meat can this harm him also.
When we got the dog he was severally under weight we got him to gain back some but we keep feeding him and he will not gain no more. You can see still see his ribs a little and his stomach is still sucked in slightly. He is about 16 weeks old, should be be looking like this. When we got him I could wrap both hands around his stomach and my fingers would touch now I have room between my hands but he still wont get no bigger.
Thank You,
Brandy

Hi Brandy! At only 16 weeks old I wouldn't be to concerned about the weight. A male Basset will top out around 50 to 55 pounds so he is a quarter of the way there. As for table scraps... this really should only be given in moderation. To much will cause the pup to gain extra weight and since they can have a multitude of problems with their legs and spine it is something you want to be watchful for. I'm sure your in-laws mean well but you really need to put a stop to it or have your DH say something to his parents. The fatty drippings can also be given in moderation and can help with skin and fur condition. Basset's are prone to bloat. It's better to feed them a couple of small meals a day rather than one large one. If they do eat a large meal keep an eye on them for an hour or two after eating.

My personal opinion on table sraps is they are fine, but you shouldn't over do it. Onion is not good for dogs though and high levels of grease are as bad for dogs as it is for humans- just not much nutrition for the calories consumed. Also, Basset Hounds are prone to being overweight and their backs are prone to injury if they get overweight and aren't exercised well.

A 16 week old puppy has a ton of growing to do and they go through akward stages during their early lives. Make sure he's got a clean bill of health from the vet and is free of internal parasites and make sure to feed a premium dog food with real meat protein sources. That plus a few table scraps will keep him on the road to good health.
