Itchy Skin

rynniex Aug 21, 2007 02:18 PM

Hi again

Recently my 10lb min pin has been very itchy and has been almost constantly scratching. Also, she seems to have a couple of little bumps under her hair that are barely visible but I'm wondering if they may be contributing.
I just bought her a supplement called Grand Meadows-Grand Coat. I'm giving her half a tablet daily
if you go here it has the analysis.

What else could I give her to help her out? I heard fish oils were a good idea but I have no idea what or how much to give her.

This supplement looks okay, except for the sugar. But you need to determine why she is scratching; is it fleas, mites, thyroid, infection, allergy, nutritional deficiency, etc? Have you had her checked out?

well ever since she was a puppy she has had skin issues. Her skin gets really flaky and dry and she sheds heavily for a Min Pin.

Ive had her checked out by two vets and they say its not a health issue, like as far as thyroid, mites, or anything like that.
So to answer your question, I have no idea why she does this, other than she's always had sensitive skin. I think it might have to do with the weather here. Its been a constant 100º without rain this summer and that seems to be when it started getting bad again. Before recently I had it under control.
I shampoo her with Chlorhexiderm because everything else (even oatmeal shampoos) makes her itchy.

I don't know if any of that helped but thats the main gist of everything.

Also.. I just noticed today that she is rubbing her butt against the carpet which she normally doesn't do. Shes fixed so she's not in heat. I know they do that with both worms and the anal glands.. I don't know if any of this could be connected but I thought I'd throw that out there.

Try adding 1/2 tsp of fish oil or flax seed oil to her food. For a couple of weeks, try giving her only chicken, and stop everything else. If you don't see any improvement, send me the results of her past thyroid panels, as I am not convinced that this is not thyroid related.
