German Shorthair/Golden Retriever mix

babykahne Aug 22, 2007 11:23 AM

On Monday, I got a German Shorthair (mother is registered purebred German Shorthair)/Golden Retriever mix. I was just wondering if anyone can give me info about possible personality traits. I did look at info on both breeds seperately. I'm wondering does anyone else on here have this particular mix breed and, if they do, how does your dog behave? We've noticed already that Kahne (pronounced "cane"...we named him after my favorite NASCAR driver) is very curious, he gets very excited, and hates having to be put in his box at night. We will let him in the bed when he can sleep through the night and we know he won't potty on the bed. He also seems kind of fearless as he's only 8 weeks old and already jumping off of the couch...though that may be more of just the puppy in him. Anyway, any info on this mix breed would be great! And, of course, I will post a picture of my first baby (it's my first puppy that's MINE...and my girlfriend's, but other dogs have been family dogs...this one's all my responsibility LOL).

He's all black with exception to the white on his bottom lip, his chest, and some white on all of his paws.

Also, if anyone is in the Missouri Valley, Iowa area, the owner of the puppies is giving them away for free. There were two more on Monday (and it was SO hard to choose which one we wanted) a female that was white with black spots, and I believe it was another male that looked very much like Kahne. Ooh, another question, the owner had both dogs in the same pen and the mother was white and brown and the father looked like the basic Golden Retriever. Sooo...how did two of the puppies come out black?? Okay...done with questions and such. Have a nice day all!

Very cute puppy! Not exactly sure how they got black pups out of that mix. Multiple fathers in that litter? It happens.
I dont' know those breeds very well. Hopefully someone can come along and comment.

See, they kept the GS penned up with the Retriever and he's only a year old, so they were shocked about the puppies. I just always assumed that if you put a male and female dog together, eventually...you have birth(s). I don't know what the age of maturity is for Retrievers, but I gotta say that the puppies don't much look Retriever to me. The owner of the dogs does live really close to the parents of a former friend of mine and I know they have a black dog (what kind it is, I don't know)...two, actually. There's the one of breeding that I don't know and the other black dog is a Pit Bull/Rottweiler mix and it looks just like a smaller Rott. So maybe the Shorthair got out of her pen and went running, I dunno.

I'd guess at least some of the pups are fathered by the neighbor's dog. When a female is in heat and a male dog knows it, you'd be surprised how easy it is for some of these "accidents" happen.
