Aural Hematoma - Need Help

DobiMom5 Aug 23, 2007 10:39 AM

Hello!
First off, I have been to the vet for this.
I would like to ask for help or suggestions to help my older Dobie (Ruby) with an Aural Hematoma. The vet does not want to operate on her due to health reasons and age. Vet would like
us to "watch" it and hopefully in time it will resolve itself. Dog is not in pain, wants to play, eats normally, is crazy, and the vet even said "she looks good considering". I know that hematomas can do damage if not operated on. The vet discussed this with us. I basically would like to make her comfortable and try to find something that will help her body absorb the blood in her ear. She has no ear infections just the hematoma. Any help or suggestions is appreciated!!!!!!!!
Ruby Thanks you too! Somer

This will resolve even if not treated. At first the area is filled with blood, which clots, and the serum is reabsorbed with time. The clot is replaced with scar tissue, shrinking with time, to leave a shriveled ear. In humans this is known as a cauliflower ear. It is neither painful nor dangerous, only unsightly.

Thank you!!!
Just wondering approx. how long it takes for a hematoma to resolve itself? She is doing great but, we did not know how long it would take see some improvement. Also, should we put an ice pack or warm cloth on it to help?
Thank you again for your help!

The time is variable, but it can take 4-6 weeks to resolve.
