Feeding problem... she won't eat dry foo

LibertyDante Aug 27, 2007 05:27 PM

Hey,
I just adopted a 3 yr old female named Roxie. I have bought three different types of dry food and she doesn't eat any of it.. not one kibble. It's been a week now so I was scared and bought some canned food and she ate is quickly and with no problems. I took her to the vet and they said she had to problems, so today I tried pouring the canned food over some kibbles and she just ate the canned food and didn't touch the kibbles at all. What should I do? I don't know what her previous owner fed her, but it must of been just canned food.

Try mixing the kibble with the canned food and adding some warm water to the kibble. Let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes. My guess is that will do the trick. Be patient.

Personally, in the research I've done recently canned food is better for dogs than kibble so if you can afford it, staying with it is not a bad idea.

Also, I find for nordic breeds, fish based food tend to be more palatable than other foods.

Another good idea is to make some broth and drizzle it over the kibble. You can get beef bullion cubes, put one in a cup of boiling water and stir. Let it cool just a little before you put it on, though. You don't need to drench it until it's all soaked, just a generous drizzling. Once your dog realizes the food smells like beef, it should gobble it down. Eventually back off on the broth until he just eats it plain.

Also, don't be alarmed if your Husky doesn't eat every day. Sometimes they are ravenous, and other times skip a day or two of eating. Don't worry. Your dog won't starve himself. He just needs to learn that the kibble is food. Also, you may want to change brands. Plus, they like it FRESH. My favorite brand is Purina ProPlan from Petsmart or Petco.

Good luck!
