Is the Vizsla a good dog for me?

Doglover22 Aug 27, 2007 10:14 PM

Hello all you vizsla lovers! I am new to this forum, however I could really use your help. My husband and I are debating getting a vizsla. We currently live in an apartment surrounded by fields and a creek in which to exercise a dog. We both are very active people and love to hunt. Our question is this: we both are college students, however we have very light course loads and have many breaks during the day in which we come home. Would a vizsla be an appropriate pet for this type of situation? I know they are active dogs, but do they really require 2 hours a day of free running time? Any advice on this would be helpful. Thanks so much!

I'm not very familiar with the breed overall. Hopefully someone can come along and help you out.

One thing I do know is withing a breed individual personalities come into play. With my own dogs they both have incredibly high exercise requirements even though the books say the breed only need 30 minutes of exercise a day. For me, that's the absolute bare minimum and an hour of intense activity is ideal.

So, if you think meeting the bare minimum beeds is a problem, I'd look to rescue and find an older dog that is lower energy. Even then, then need to minimums, but not as much as the hyper ones that don't read the books.

Hi there, one of my dogs is a 7 1/2 yr old Vizsla which we have had since he was a puppy. They are extremely busy when they are puppies up until around 3 yrs old. I remember those days fondly . We had to take him out for at least a total of 1.5 to 2 hours off leash a day to burn his energy and if we didn't we would pay. You could skip one day but they really are better housemates when they get their exercise. I initially had to make sure I exercised him a bit before obedience class as he would be too wound up to learn anything.

Having said all that they are a lot of work in the beginning but they are one of the best dogs I have ever owned. I wouldn't be without one. They are extremely intelligent and have an amazing work ethic.

If you are honest with yourself and you can provide enough exercise mental and physical then I don't see why not but you may find you would be better off with an older rescue. There are so many in rescues right now.

Good luck,

C
