Another Sebaceuos cyst

shepmom Aug 31, 2007 07:23 PM

Dear Dr. Tobin,

Dear Dr. Tobin,

My East German Shepard has recently developed several large sebaceous cysts along her spine, mostly on the right side. I'm treating them with an irrigation of calendula & plantain tea mixed with several drops of echinacea, reishi and a small amount of bloodroot tincture after the vet lanced them. I'm curious about the cause since she's enjoyed an extremely healthy 9 years. I'd like to avoid recurrence.

Also, what's your position on vaccinating for rabies with skin conditions. I've only given her a rabies vaccine once in her life when she was about a year and will not give her another while she's experiencing the skin problems. Thank-you!

Sebaceous cysts seem to be more prevalent in certain breeds and lines, so I would think that there is a strong genetic component. Homeopathic Thuja seems to help some dogs with this condition.
Rabies vaccinations are required by law in all states. However, the vaccines are licensed only for use in healthy animals, so if the vet gives a shot to a dog he is treating for something else, he is using the vaccine off-label and is assuming the liability if something untoward occurs. If he insists on still giving the vaccine, have him sign a paper to that effect.
