RO water for the long term...

Jeff Hardwick Sep 03, 2007 11:02 AM

Hi all, nice forum here and it seems very busy. I'm visiting from the reptile side and have yet to get more than one or two Idunno type responses to this question.
Is anyone giving their animals reverse osmosis water as the sole water source and have you found any negative results or validated negative research to NOT use RO water?
I've used RO on 150 snakes for 3 years now and in spite of the "they're gonna dissolve" warnings, they're actually thriving. Each breeding season is more successful and the snakes still have strong spines instead of the jello strings I was warned about!
I can site more common sense reasons for the use of purified water(s) than cautions but am lacking any supportive data about mineral depletion or kidney stress on animals.
Thanx in advance, Jeff

I'm not so sure it matters what water they drink as long as it's fresh and they get plenty of it. More and more people drink bottled and filter water due to the contaminates in common tap water so it would seem to me our pets deserve the same consideration.

Personally my dogs get Filtered water, as it's Safer than letting them Drink the Stuff that comes strait out of my Tap, Vs filtering it Before I Give it to them, And when I can Really afford it I will buy Strait Bottled water. I'm just not Convinced that Lake Michigan's water can be cleaned as much as they say it can. So nothing but Filtered Stuff for my Guys!!!

From all I have heard RO is supposed to be better for all involved. Everyone I know who has this is more than thrilled with it.

You may not get many responses due to the fact that most RO systems are fairly expensive. Or at least they were when we looked at getting it.

I really do not have any data for you however what I can say is you have seen your snakes thrive, and that should be proof enough that this water is perfectly safe.
