What is a pit bull

PHFaust Sep 05, 2007 10:10 AM

Recently I was interviewed by a local radio station to counter PETA. PETA is calling for the end of dog breeding starting with Pit Bulls. I have put in my time working in a shelter (2 years) and have been heavily involved in rescue.

One of the biggest things we as "Pit Bull" owners see a lot of is breed mis-identification.

With the help of PHGuido and a few people from our rescue, we came up with a list of breeds. With a short time table we still managed to come up with 60 breeds of dogs that we have personally heard of as being referred to as "Pit Bulls" We APBT owners know there is no breed as pit bulls, but I thought others would be interested in this list. They may be pure bred or mixes of these breeds. Yes we have heard all of these.

Cindy... thanks to you and the others for bringing this misconception about "Pit Bulls" and APBT's to the forefront. People look at me like I'm nuts here when I argue with them that a Pit Bull is not a specific breed of dog just a product of specific breeding.
Here is a link you will find most useful...
Take the Pit Bull test

That is one of my favorite tests, but it is also the easiest for me to pick out the dog. I wish I could remember where the one that had known mixes in the bunch. It was the only one I didnt guess right on the first time!

When you explain it, you can try to explain that with a comparison to herding dogs. Lots of herding dogs. Not one breed named Herd.

That is an excellent suggestion when I try to get my point across. I'll remember that about the herding dogs.

I didn't find the test easy. My mom and I both could not find the ABPT.

not to sound like an ass or anything but, why wouldnt u call the apbt a breed. every breed on dog was made from crosses and selective breeding for the task that they needed to perform. if it was up to me they would probably be the purest breed of dogs, in the since that alot still posses what they were breed for and to an extent not watered down show dogs like most breeds. granted there are some exceptions to that rule like the almighty blue pitbull which is more or less just a pet bull

APBT is a breed. Pit Bull is not. The term pit bull also includes your American Bulldogs. American Pit Bull Terrier is an actual breed with standards. Just like American Bulldog is a breed with standards. Pit bull covers most anything with a big head and a large chest. My APBT came from lines of dogs that were bred to fight. While I see occasional snippets of it, he is a very dog friendly boy and plays well with everyone but puppies.

Its kinda like saying all pythons get huge. Sure the retics and burms do, but that is not all pythons.

The term Pit Bull actually comes from the phrase Pit and Bull Terrier which described the fight dogs of england and encompassed all dogs that fought. My dog doesn't fight therefore he is not in theory a pit bull.

He is one of the tallest in his litter. One of the dogs kept the correct size. I like the classic pitty head. Not the big ole ghetto style people see more often now. Neutering early can cause weird growth spurts, but both my dogs are rescues.

ya i had my 4 yr old ab nuetuerd at 4months old and i believe that has something to do with his back half not working as it should. not to faund of those ghetto pits either kinda makes me sad to see one of the greastest breeds ever turned in mastiff type dogs or short low slung eb types

Im going to share this shot with everyone. It is actually my Favorite. On the end is Cain. He had a horrible life. And has many BAD health issues related to his first owner. Cain is the typical ghetto pit. A handsome man, he was owned by a famous basketball player from Chicago. Cain, his sister and his brother all lived in a 4x4 pen with concrete flooring. All dogs were intact. They were outside 24/7 365 in CHICAGO. They got food every now and again when the owner's manager remembered to feed them. After a fight between the three (probably between Cain and Able) Cain became Cainette. Thankfully Able was also neutered at the time. He is sitting with PHGuido, the co-host of the Bull Pen Chat. He lives with her now.

My two are in the middle. Brutus the mighty AB. My little man. Tough guy I tell ya. When we got him he was just shy of 60 lbs but that was an immense weight gain from when he hit the shelter at 42. Our first night alone, I began counting the scars on him, head down. I stopped at 32 scars and at his shoulders. Short of his arthritis and elongated soft palette (which is common to the breed) he is a WONDERFUL Man. My little tough guy. We are unsure how old he is or was when we got him.

Caesar and Pilot are next. Caesar is my lovely APBT and Pilot is his brother. Both from same litter. The owner was shot 30 times in his living room. The dogs were seized. Pi never left his foster mom. Early on he had a slight heart murmur that has left now, but by the time it left he was not able to leave his foster mom. Caesar came to us at a week moment for my husband. PUPPY BREATH I believe is the true medical term. I need to get a new side by side shot of the two since I believe Caesar has grown quite a bit now.

BTW this photo was taken after a full day of doggie fun. 4 Bullies running a yard unleashed and no fights. This is a day we are very proud of.

That would be VERY bad breeding. He was bowed when we got him, however over the years it gets much worse. The bad breeding is what caused it and the arthritis is a side effect.

aww poor guy, he looks like such a sweet heart to, very sucky that he has to be like that. i swear the ones with stuff wrong with them usually have the best personality of all. my boy cujo despite his leg/hip situation is the biggest sweetheart of all time. will get nitty gritty if the situation arises but very much loves to just lay in bed and snuggle all day. all the little kids from down the street come over and play with him once or twice a week. its super funny to see like 5-6 kids hanging on to the tug while he drags them all over the front yard. there is absolutly no way my guys could sit next to other doggys like that. oh and did u hear about the picket pride raid? those poor abs were in such terrible condition. been living off of feces and carcases of the ones who already died. SO SAD.

PHFaust Sep 13, 2007 11:56 AM

Im sure I did hear of it. But the bad part is I get so many stories in because of the rescue that I lose track of what I hear.

The abuses both of my breeds suffer is insane. And having worked in rescue so long, I begin to lose track of what story is which.

Both of my dogs HAVE to be social around others. Caesar does have some issues with really annoying puppies and he for some reason doesnt like deaf dogs. Other than that both dogs know they have a show life and a home life. Show is different behavior and they know it. When they get their fancy pants collars and clothes on they strut.

Heres a few shots of the pittie Caesar running the yard with his ball.
