I have always had dogs and cats and they live together quite well.
I think these links can explain it better than I.

Hi,
I just indroduced 2 kittens into my household with 2 adult dogs (a Staffordshire Bull Terrier and a Bullmastiff). My answer is VERY carefully. I don't know if this is an adult cat or a kitten. First of all you will want to make sure that your cat's claws are trimmed so they're not sharp. When I brought my kittens in, I sat the cat carrier down in the floor in the living room so the dogs and kitten could see each other for a few mins to know each other was there. My dogs were raised with 2 cats and get along with cats so I knew they wouldn't intentionally hurt them. Then after a few mins, I put the kitten in a separate room all it's own (a spare bedroom with food, water & litter box. From time to time I would bring it back in the living room inside the cat carrier. Then...I had the kitten loose and introduced my dogs one at a time on leash to see how they would react and told them to "leave it". Finally I would let 1 dog at a time loose with the kitten under VERY close supervision. Then both if they acted fine, but always under a very watchful eye. You have to make sure you protect the cat or kitten. They were allowed to sniff it's butt etc. to get to know it's smell. When I went to work or anywhere or couldn't watch I would confine the kitten to it's room until I got home. Now it's one big happy family with everybody loose all the time. Hope this helps,
