Trouble with Insurance

aintnorock Oct 02, 2007 09:44 AM

HI all you Chow Lovers-

I just moved to South Louisiana. I have a mixed breed dog - she's probably 7/8 chow - looks Chow, has a black tongue, is a furball, has a crooked tail, but has a brown nose. She is an absolute sweetheart, great with kids, great with everybody. Does not exhibit typical Chow 1 owner dog behavior.

My problem is this - in Louisiana, because of Katrina, it is practically impossible to get homeowners insurance, and now the insurer of last resort has refused to cover me because I own a chow. What are my options? Their only option is for me to get rid of the dog, which I will not do.

Do any of you have any information on insurance - which companies will write a liability policy for g, Chows in particular. I know I'm not the only person in the world with this problem.

please help.

carl

I'm sorry- I don't know how to help you. I've never been in favor of breed biases of this type. Is there a way you can negotiate with your insurance company? My recommendation woudl be to offer to have your dog take the Canine Good Citizen Class and pass the test. That will reduce the likelyhood that your dog is a problem and give the insurance company less leverage.

That's the problem - the insurance company refuses to negotiate. They won't even allow me to exclude the dog from the policy - they just don't care. Post Katrina Louisiana is a nightmare.

Is it possible to contact an out of state insurance company? There has to be some out there that will not discriminate against a dog. The information in the link provided lists several insurance companies though I'm guessing some have taken a big hit because of Katrina. The only other thing I can think of would be to contact your State Attorney General's office and see what kind of help they may offer.

My mom had trouble getting home owner insurance because she has a miniature pincher.

I know state farm insurance will base its decision on the dog not the breed. You are fighting a double edged sword in that area with the hurricane. I would try State Farm Insurance if you have not already.

Well, let me tell you about the alleged "Good Neighbor" State Farm. I've been a State Farm customer for 35 years. They refused me a policy in Louisiana despite that. I will not ever again do business with them - I give them my business for most of my life even when I could've gotten cheaper insurance elsewhere, and they cut me off when I moved to Lousisana. They can rot in h*** as far as I'm concerned.

BTW, I have been able to obtain insurance elsewhere.

thanks,
carl

Was the refusal due to the location you moved or the dog? Since right now we refer them for people who adopt pit bulls and they are the largest company that does not judge on breed, this would be helpful.
