Buddy has a lump by his shoulder

carmeny Oct 04, 2007 12:09 PM

We were petting our big dog Buddy (golden and lab retriever cross) the other night and my husband noticed he has a lump between his neck and left shoulder. The lump is quite large under the skin (a little bigger than a grape) - it is quite soft but you can definitely feel it there and it moves around - not on a bone or anything. He is booked in to see the vet to get it checked out but does anyone have any ideas what this could be? I am worried about him but his appetite is very good and he is drinking and playing when outside. Although he does seem to be sleeping a little more or laying around. It doesn't appear to hurt him when we touch it or when he is playing outside. I am praying it is nothing serious as we just lost one of our other dogs 2 weeks ago (he was killed by a car). I will keep everyone posted on what the vet says!

Sorry for the loss of your other dog. Though Goldens and Labs can be prone to cancer... hopefully from you have described it is nothing more than a fatty deposit. My Springer mix from way back used to get those. At any rate please do keep us updated and I'll keep a good thought for Buddy.

Thank you! I spoke with the director of the spca yesterday when i was there and she thought it sounded like a fatty deposit. So I am hoping and praying that is all it is. He goes on Wednesday (as this weekend is our Thanksgiving) so I will definitely post after we find out. Come to think of it, my mom and dad had a black lab and he had one of these as well - and it was a fat lump and I remember them testing it with a syringe and checking if it came out oily! Thank you for keeping him in your thoughts!
