Could Buddy still be grieving?

carmeny Oct 04, 2007 12:20 PM

We lost one of our dogs a couple of weeks ago, Hobo. I had 2 big dogs - Hobo and Buddy. Buddy moped around that day and the day after that but he still seems to be moping around and it has been 2 weeks. Now I have been told about dog's memories being short - but could he possibly still be grieving the loss of his pal, Hobo?

I believe that Buddy could still be grieving Hobo's passing. A dog does have a short memory but I thinks it's more the routine he had with Hobo that he knows isn't quite right anymore. He could also be picking up on your own sadness from losing Hobo.

In my experience, dogs have incredibly long memories and your dog could easily be grieving after only 2 weeks. I'm sorry you have lost a great pet. I hope all start to heal fairly soon.

Thank you both - that is very helpful and your thoughts were much the same I was having! I believe he misses his big pal because my other dogs are small dogs. When the time is right and we find the right one we will adopt another large dog so Buddy has someone to run in the field with again! He has actually started to run in the pasture again and have fun - for a few days after Hobo passed he just kind of walked around sniffing (i am sure where hobo marked!) we have since adopted a small female dog, Charley, and we are fostering her pack sister (a lady had 9 dogs and surrendered 5 to spca) and Deena was returned after only two days with her adoptive parents for aggression and biting - the spca was going to put her down if my husband and I didn't take her in to see what is going on! So far she is with my 7 dogs and she is fine! no signs of aggression at all and definitely no biting.
I let Buddy be, and make sure i play ball with him more and stuff so he continues to get his running exercise! Thanks again!

Thanks for the update- I'm sure Buddy will get used to the new routine. It's just tough to move on at times.

Sounds like you have a full house- nice of you to foster. Budd may just pick one of those dogs as a new pal to hang around with. He won't be fooled when a new larger dog is brought in. He'll have to get used to that dog just like any new dog.
