Hi I'm new, and I have a new puppy!

AChickWhoSigns Oct 10, 2007 08:56 PM

Hello, my name is Helen, I am getting ready to turn 24 on Monday, and I am hard of hearing. I just got a great puppy from my local ASPCA, and they say he is a Chow-Chow/Labrador Retriever mix. He is currently 3 months old, according to them, and weighs 6 pounds. This doesn't make sense to me, he is not underweight, he is hyper as a puppy should be, and hes been neutered 2 days ago.

My question is, how big should I expect him to get? I am taking him to his first real vet visit on Friday, and I will ask their opinion too, but everything I read online and on my Royal Canin food says that at age 5 months he should be about 50% of his adult weight. I don't think he is going to get as big as a normal Chow-Lab mix would be.

I don't care, I love him, and hopefully after his obedience classes and once he gets older, I want to train him to be my hearing dog, if his temperament stays the same. He is wonderful now, but I know puppies can change.

So, this is my story and my question, and thanks for listening!

Helen

Hi Helen,
I don't know much about the Chow/Lab mix but it would seem to me that at three months he would weigh more that six pounds. It will be interesting to see what the vet says. Do you have a picture of him that you can post? That might help and I'm sure the vet will have some advice for you as well. Good luck to you and hope you'll be able to tell us more about this pup. I'll bet that he's a real cutie.

Hi Helen and welcome to the DogHobbyist. Also a big welcome and congrats on your new little boy!
At 6 pounds right now he may be on the small side but I think you'll find now that he is out of the shelter and will be getting good meals and lots of love that he will sprout up right before your eyes. I'm going to take a guess that he might top out at between 30-40 pounds. Can't wait to see a picture of the little fellow. What did you name him?

He is a tan with some light spots that look like they may turn white or whiteish later on, poofy puppy fur, his name is Peanut, I should have named him Bear or something, but didn't think of that until I started calling him Peanut. He respond to the name, and he is very smart.

Thanks for the info.

Well Peanut it is then! Can't wait to see pictures and read stories of the little guy. It would also be interesting to read of the training he will receive to be your hearing dog. Please post progress reports! I basically hang out on the Shiba board so feel free to stop by and say hello and also ask any questions you might have. Everyone is welcome there!

I would be interested in hearing about the training for hearing dogs as well. I see seeing eye dogs being trained in my town all the time but have never seen how a hearing dog is trained. Feel free to drop by the Shih Tzu board also. Our little ones are very friendly. Katie will even share some of her toys with Peanut.

I like the name Peanut, Helen. It will be a good topic of conversation when you meat someone new while walking him. Can't wait to see a picture of Peanut.
