New husky to our pack!

itobean Oct 15, 2007 07:13 PM

My husband was hiking the applachian trail and adopted a husky in Vermont from a breeder of dog sled runners. She is the sweetest little girl and we've had no problems with introducing her to our pack of 3 other huskies. The problem that we are having is that since Trinity (new husky) spent so much one-on-one time with my husband is that she freaks out whenever he leaves the house. She will pace the house looking for him everywhere and whining. She will come and sit by me and relax and even nap but then within 20-25 minutes she is up again and pacing and whining. Sometimes she even howls! How do we break this separation anxiety that she has over my husband? The other three dogs just look at her like she is crazy!! We even recorded the dogs when we ran errands together the other day.....the howling wasn't bad - just twice in the two hours. We didn't hear any whining. Any suggestions?

I think this is normal pack behavior. Wolf packs are often anxious about the alphas being gone on a hunt. It's also anticipation of a meal besides the separation anxiety.

I think your Sibe will grow out of it, especially as she becomes more accustomed to you, rather than your husband. Also, you may want to start feeding her yourself if you're not doing it now and maybe show some dominant behavior (submissive hold for example).

Good luck!
