anal glad concern in 14week JRT

ecb Oct 16, 2007 10:15 AM

we got our JRT in the end of August
she has a GREAT disposition, but got a bit feisty once we got all the worms out of her
with the history of worms, I pay close attention to any scooting behavior
She is clear of worms now (3 clean fecals) but the week after her last worming treatment they milked her (pretty full) glands.
the last couple days she has been a bit jumpy, and going out more frequently. She is looking a bit skinny, but it seems to be a growth spurt, Vet is not concerned.
This morning when I took her out for her second AM stool, she actually wedged her behind between a drain pipe and the house to make her stool (hard to collect there) then came out in the yard to finish, then was straining (A LOT) until she got 2 drops from her gland (I assume) then she went to go strain again (twice more) to get out 2 or 3 drops each time. She scooted herself a bit between each attempt at straining, and she has been having softer stools
her diet is Science Diet puppy (I alternate between lamb and rice, and small bites)
we have a variety of puppy treats for her training (sea jerkey, Piggy puffs, Liver Blocks, and Zukes)
she gets at least 2 half mile walks a day (along with misc. running and playing with me or the kids)

What can i do to help her stools firm up to appropriatly stimulate the glad openings. I do nt want to have to take her to the vet to often for milking, and I M not comfortable doing it myself (to many people I know hurt their dogs doing it themselves)

Try cleaning the area daily with apple cidar vinegar. Have the dog relax--on her back is good--and wet a folded paper towel or generous pad of toilet paper with real apple cidar vinegar (not "flavored". It's not very expensive at all.

With females, I clean the vulva area first--always first, never after cleaning the anal area, because that would spread bacterial TO to the bladder and kidneys. So, thoroughly wipe/rub the vulva area, and then thoroughly wipe/rub the anal area and discard the apple-cidar-vinegar covered paper towel.

Do this once a day. It doesn't hurt. It is amazing the difference this makes in infections.
