Newfie with Lyme/arthritis

shepmom Oct 18, 2007 10:57 AM

My friend's 9YO Newfie has experienced a sudden decline in activity level/control of her back legs. The holistic vet did some acupuncture, massage and prescribed injectible antiinflammitories but was not very reassuring. She described the scenario as a flat tire running on the rim but did want them to continue visits after the initial several-hundred dollar visit which is difficult for my friend to consider since the treatment didn't seem to help.

Besides diet and addition of glucosamine and perhaps devils claw/boswelia what else might be helpful? I suggested they try the Teasel protocol for lyme (1drop a day for a week hasn't changed things) but still wonder about lyme. The dog looks like she has no nuerological connection to the back end when attempting to walk. The back legs are extremely wobbly and uncoordinated.

If the weakness appeared in both rear legs at the same time, my first suspicion would be some trauma to the spine. If that is ruled out, check for hip displasia, torn cruciate ligaments, and Lyme disease. I'm not familiar with the treatment you described, but what I use for diagnosis and treatment is homeopathic Ledum 1M, one pellet 3 times a day for 3 days. The best treatment I have found for arthritis is Longlife Pet Supplement, if that is needed.
