teach dog to hunt mice

ursasmaller Oct 20, 2007 04:50 PM

I have a very definite mouse problem, but am adverse to getting a cat (so is my landlord). My dogs are not typical rodent hunters, like terriers, but I was wondering if anyone would have any tips for training them to at least torment, if not catch mice. Right now, when they hear a mouse squeaking or rustling, they'll glance in the general direction, and then lay down and go to sleep.

The older dog is 3 years old, a border collie/retriever/german shepherd mix, and the young one is 1 year old, a karelian bear dog/mystery mix. I was thinking about catching a mouse and then rewarding the dogs for chasing the corpse, similar to training a coon hound, but I'm not sure. I was hoping for some helpful tips, in case anyone has ever tried this, or even has experience training a hunting dog. Otherwise, I guess I'll just have to wing it.

feedback would be greatly appreciated. The mice are beginning to irritate me, and moving is not an option.

Mice can make dogs very, very sick. I think I'd look for a different solution. Maybe cube traps that simply confine the mouse until you decide where to throw it out. Those are less likely to cause harm to your dogs. In the long run, it's really best if your dogs do ignore mice. Seriously.
