Question

edsonorellana Oct 22, 2007 11:43 PM

I recently had my 4 year old GSD neutered. Today I noticed that the sack was still there, it looks like it's empty, like a flap but I don't understand why it's still there. I don't know if this can cause problems at all for my dog. I had another GSD who passed away at 16 last year and he did't have this at all so I'm a bit concerned.

I am going to call the vet tomorrow but I wanted to come on here and see what you guys thought. You guys have been great help before and I know I'll get answers.

Also, I've read online about weight gain in males after neutering. I want to know what I can do to prevent this. I currently feed him Eukanuba Adult Large breed.

Thanks guys!

Edson

Since the dog was older when neutered, I'm guessing it's a product of that, but I'm not an expert in that area so maybe someone else will come along.

As for weight gain after being altered- I do think the metabolism does slow down a bit with the reduced amount of testosterone. Extra exercise will benefit any dog and cutting back a bit on the food intake is typically never a bad idea as well.

Thanks. I suppose it's normal then. I thought it looked weird. I will make sure to have him out with me more often now to avoid weight gain. He is still wearing that uncomfortable collar. The vet said top keep it on for 9 days and and it's only been 4 days. I wonder if taking it off early would be a problem..

Take it off when you can supervise him and make sure he's not scratching it or licking it. I don't have my dogs walk the neighborhood wearing it- they are too busy exploring to notice the incision then. Same with playing games. When left alone is when it needs to be on and probably during the night when you can't see him groom.

I had a rescued pit bull that had the same thing after being fixed and it went away over time so it is normal. As far as weight gain goes some dogs do gain weight after so just watch how much you feed him and make sure he gets enough exercise.

Oh and I dont know if this is the first GSD you had but make sure you break his feeding into twice a day, no running right after eating, raise food off the ground and not to much water with his food to pervent bloat which GSDs are know for getting
