new puppy

bonkersmom Oct 23, 2007 12:46 AM

Hi,
I'm new at this so bear with me, please. I just got a new puppy from SPCA last Saturday. The paper work says he is 2 months and is a Chihuahua or Chi-mix. He might be as much as 3 months??? He is about 4 lbs. and very bright if he's only 2 months. Does anyone have a formula for what a puppy weighs at 2 months, like do they double or triple their weight at adulthood? He has tiny feet, baby teeth and testicles have not dropped completely (or at all?). When do these things happen? He'll have well puppy check up the 24th of Oct. Hope to find out more then, but appreciate any answers or guesses.

Thanks,

This is always so hard to guess. The litter my Pit Bull came from has dogs ranging in size from 34 lbs to 110 lbs. When we were first watching Caesar grow, we thought he was going to be in the upper level of weight. He is a lean 68 lbs and I have a hard time keeping him there. The reason I explain this is we knew what the parents were built like. 2 dogs out of a litter of 11 are built like the parents.

With rescue dogs as opposed to dogs from good breeders, it is next to impossible to say exactly how large the pup will grow up to be. I can promise however the dog wont get bigger than 30 lbs. And even that is WAY to big. I can also say no matter the size of the dog, the size your heart becomes when you are with them is 1000 times bigger.

Enjoy your pup and wait to see what plans the world has for him.

Be sure to check with vet about the testicles. The alter for retained can be pretty invasive. It is more along the lines of a spay, however the can still reproduce.

I don't have any answers for you, but that is what is so great about a mix. Fun on a daily basis seeing what is new. Neutering is very important for health and temperament reasons and the vet can give you more info on that I am sure.

Thanks for the rescue and come back and let us know all about what is going on.

My favorite rescue say is:
"To the world you are just one person, to a rescue you are the world"

You are now that dogs world, make it a great one!!

Cheryl,
We are not only this puppy's world, but our other dog and 2 cats were also rescued. They are all indoor pets and additionally I feed 2-3 wilder neighborhood animals on my patio. Also worked in Samoyed Rescue checking the local pound and providing a foster home for them. That was in the early '70s Thanks for the encouragement.
Best, Marsha
