9 year old Chesapeake

CharStuff Oct 27, 2007 06:56 PM

Hello, I have a 9 year old Chesapeake named Carson. This past February he he was diagnosed with possible liver problems and very low thyroid, he was put on Doxycycline and Enrofloxacin along with thyroid meds. I started cooking for him and he seemed to recover very well. But within 8 months seemed to have a relaspe, once again he was put on the same meds and once again seemed to make a recovery. Will this continue to reoccur? Are there more tests that would need to be run which are very costly! Is there holistic treatments that I can use to help keep him healthy?

Thank you

I assume, since he was given several antibiotics, that he had some type of liver infection. Once an infection is gone, there is no reason to expect it to return. In order to aid his liver, you could give him milk thistle in his food each day. If you can get it as an extract in a capsule, try giving him one capsule twice a day, with food.

Thank you for your reply. Yes he was on several antibiotics. The last panel he had was at the end of July and everything was A ok then. I had him on milk thistle but the vet recommended "Hepato Support" instead, is milk thistle a better product? He is also on Levothyroxine for thyriod and I also give him "Jointagen" which is a joint, skin and vascular support formula. His diet is Evo kibble and I also cook brown rice, sweet potatoe, ground turkey, ground pork, oatmeal along with green beans and flaxseed, and add a scoop to his meals.

I am sure open to suggestions! Thank you

If he has been doing well since July, he shouldn't need any antibiotics. The diet sounds good, and the other supplements are for other chronic problems he is showing. This doesn't sound like a very expensive treatment. I am not familiar with the liver or skin and joint supplement you mention.
