Dog bit owner -

jc302 Oct 29, 2007 02:57 PM

My sister and her husband have a 5, all most 6 year old rottweiller. The dog has issues, we think it can't see well, or may even be a bit mentally retarded. They have had on going problems with her, physically and behavioral... she runs in to things, knocks over things and doesn't act normal in general. Makes a mess of her dog food... falls down all the time... I could go on and on.

The dog gets nervous whenever they have company over. There has been a few instances when the dog would growl at company. One time a few years ago, they had a bbq at the house and the dog had gotten a hold of a chicken bone. My sister tried to get her to drop the chicken bone, and take it away from the dog for fear the dog would choke. Well, the dog ended up biting my sisters finger, and would not let go of her finger.

Now, this past weekend, my sister and husband had 3 people over and when my sister went to give the dog attention by bending down and petting her, the dog freaked out and bit my sister in the face. My sister had to get rushed to the ER and get stitches by a plastic surgeon. Thank god she is ok now... but it is just so upseting.

Most people in my family want to see the dog put down. She can't be trusted especially if she is willing to bite her owner... and she has had a history of not acting right. There are small children in the family and neighborhood who may visit.... and it is really scary.

I know this is just an awful situation... my sister loves her dog, but what should she do if she can't trust the dog to not attack her again???

Best bet is to take the dog to a veterinarian and possibly also a specialist, and find out what is wrong with her. Perhaps it can be relieved. If not, it will make a decision much more clear.

It's quite possible from what you have described that the dog does have trouble seeing or at least there is some underlying condition for the behavior she is shwoing. When is the last time this dog has been seen a vet? Even a canine opthalmologist might be considered. I don't know if Rottweillers can be predisposed to glaucoma but it can slowly rob a dog of it's site... sometimes without the owner even knowing.
