Inguinal Hernias

ChrisX80z Nov 02, 2007 06:46 PM

Does anyone know if these are hereditary? I have a friend who wants to purchase a nice little bitch pup for breeding, but the pup has had surgery by the breeder to correct an inguinal hernia. Friend swears the Vet of the breeder & her own Vet said the hernia was no big deal. I have to wonder ... So, are hernias genetic, and should a dog who had one ever be bred?

I'm not 100% certain but I think hernias are pretty common in dogs so I might think they are not herediatary but would have to do some reading on it.

I've been told in the past that a dog with a hernia should not be bred. I have really not investigated though the reality of that statement before. Hopefully someone in the forums can help you out.

From what I have read it is mostly inherited and should not be bred.
