Feeding Raw Pork and Bones

colorfulcritters Nov 06, 2007 05:46 AM

I fed my dog's some raw pork and bones and one seemed to get the runs. Nonetheless, I'm wondering if raw pork's okay for dogs and why raw is not as dangerous or fattening as cooked pork.

What's more, what raw meat is the safest to feed them? The dogs seem to do okay with all kinds. But I'd heard raw bones are the best for them, and the safest, so have fed them all sorts of bones except chicken bones.

Hi,

I have given my pups meaty pork neck bones and ground pork with no ill effects. But my main source of raw meaty bones is chicken backs. You can also use wings, beef necks, knuckles, etc. As long as it's not cooked it's ok for dogs. Depending on your dog's jaw the bigger bones might be a challenge but you dont want the pieces too small, in case they gulp them down. My only reservation on feeding bones is the weight bearing legs from chicken and turkeys-- I grind these (bones and all) and mix with veggie pulp on occasion. My other problem with these bones is there's not enough bone in something like a chicken leg quarter to provide for balanced calcium. So when I use this I also sprinkle on some crushed egg shells to add more calcium.

I have heard that some dogs can get the runs from beef. And there can be a possibility of parasites from pork. My pups have been eating this way since January and they're doing fine. Watch you dog and see. You are the best judge of how he is doing.

They both seem to get loose stools occasionally. Otherwise, I think they're fine. To sum up, you pretty much say that all raw bones are fine for dogs, and raw meats?

Yes, I'd pretty much have to say that all raw bones and meats are fine. One of the tricks with raw diets is mixing it up. Different animal meats will have different proportions of various nutrients (especially fatty acids). That is why I use chicken, beef, pork, fish and sometimes lamb or goat. Also, keep in mind that the calcium levels should be high enough. Raw meat alone is not balanced. Raw meaty bones are.

Hope this helps.
