Some Great Sports!

Vharter Nov 16, 2007 12:43 PM

I have owned malinois for about 5 years now. I was introduced to the breed when I went to school in Sanford, Nc at Tarheel K9 Academy. I currently compete in PSA (Protection Sport Association) and also Schutzhund. I currently own Sem and Jori. They are definitly a handful! I also just adopted a new member to the family. His name is Jip and he is a German Shepherd mix w/ Flat coated retriever. I am thinking about just doing some Competition Obedience with him since he is alot slower than my mali gators. I would like to hear about some other sports that everyone competes in!

Tracking! A dog of that mix will be great at it! And obedience, yes indeed, at least through Novice. Then you'll need to consider whether jumping is wise for the dog or not.

And if the temperament is very steady and friendly, therapy dogs! You probably can't do that with your Schutzhund dogs. There are insurance concerns when dogs have that training that concern therapy dog registries. But if he is not used in Schutzhund, he could lead you into the wonderful world of therapy dogs. There are so many options, so many kinds of places to visit.

Your right! He would probably make an excellent therapy dog! He is very laid back. Its nice having a dog that will take time to lay and watch TV with you lol. He is going to be to big and heavy for jumping. He will probably do well in tracking. I find it rather boring though! Thank you for all the advice!
