Is a Weimaraner right for me???

mealworm33 Nov 18, 2007 04:27 PM

Hi Weimaraner owners,

I am in search of a dog and really fell in love with Weimaraners. I have never had a dog before; however, I'm very good with animals and I'm willing to enroll my dog in dog training.

Here's my problem. I'll be living in my parent's basement when I graduate from college in May... (haha It's not as pathetic as it sounds). Anyway, my parents have two cats, both outdoor pets. I was thinking about putting up some type of electric fence in the yard; however, I'm very concerned about the my new weinmaraner attacking the cats as I heard they may do. The cats are not allowed in my basement, by the way.

Does anyone have any experience with weimaraner's and cats?

Any help would be very appreciated!

Thanks,
Marie

You need a real fence, not an electric one. And don't leave the dog with access to the cats when you are not directly supervising. You might want to think about waiting a bit longer to get a dog. Think about what other life changes are going to happen in your next 10 to 15 years. Dogs really need to be in stable homes. It makes a world of difference.

Thanks for your reply, I have decided against the electic fence. I will put up a real fence...

How high should a fence for a Weimaraner be?

How big should the fenced are be? (I don't plan to keep the dog in there for extended periods of time)

Thanks!

6 feet is good for fence height. You don't ever want the dog to have the experience of going over the fence, so it's best to start with full-height.

My fenced area is just 30' x 30', and I pick up poop in it daily. The dogs are free in the house, and it seems to work great. For more exercise, you can use a leash or a long line--holding the other end, never tying a dog out and leaving--and go beyond the fence.
