Potty Training

schnoodlegaia Dec 02, 2007 06:31 AM

Hi I just got a 12 week old schnoodle and I was told she was trained to go on paper so I put newspaper on the ground in her cage and outside of her cage. However she isn't using it. Shes gone on the floor three times all in different spots but I haven't seen her do it. What should I do?

Hi and welcome to the board. You don't say exactly how long you've had your schnoodle. Since she's young and new to your home it may take her a little time to adjust. If you do catch her going on the paper, give her praise, praise and more praise. I tiny treat every now and then may help as well. You might also want to put the papers a distance from where she sleeps. Hopefully, one of these days, the "light will go on" and she'll hit the paper. By the way, what did you name your little one? Hope we'll be seeing some pictures of her soon. I'll bet that she's a real cutie.

Congrats on your new puppy. Puppies are a lot of fun, but also a lot of work! I love her name. Another approach to house-training would be to take her out on a regular schedule if you're home with her during the day. Has she gone potty in her crate? Most dogs try not to go in their crates, so the crate can be a good training tool, too. You can crate her any time you're not watching her. If she starts sniffing around the house, take her out right away. When outside, ask her to "go potty" and if she does, praise ("good potty!". If she doesn't, take her back inside and put her back in the crate and take her out 15 mintues later and do the same thing. Most dogs need to go out shortly after they eat (you can feed her in her crate early on too) and after play time. I used this method with my dog, and she only peed in the house once or twice the first couple days. Good luck!
