Distructive behavior?

komodoryu Dec 07, 2007 09:45 PM

Well I've had this dog for 4 months. I am by no means new to dogs or dog training. My other two dogs(one who lives with my parents and my own dog) are trained just fine. The older dog can count to 10, do all the most common commands, recognize colors, rooms and toys by name. My other dog that lives with me is a year and getting there as well.

Now this puppy, who I am working on with obedience still is wearing my last nerve. I have never met or trained a dog that has tried my patience so much.

Here is what happened just today. When I am at work, she is crated due to her being a puppy and what not.

Today, she broke out of her wire crate, litterally bent the bars. She then pooped 3 times in my room where the crate was located, broke through the barrier blocking the room so that the other dog wouldnt get in.

She then destroyed all the x-mas presents I had bought so far for my family. climbed onto the table to eat the lunch I had left. She then pooped a 4th time in the dining room, everything was knocked off the table, she shreadded anything she could get ahold of.

I know my other dog didnt do any of this. In the year I've had him, he had only ever shred paper, never ate my food no matter how low I left it. She has 2 chew toys in the crate with her, and there are about 20 different ones in the main part of the house including puzzle toys like kongs and twist-n-treats. THere is also a bed she does not chew up in the crate.

When I am home, she'll occasionally try to chew something, but no where NEAR this bad. But every time she gets out when I'm not here, its a disaster, though this time is by far the worst.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

This sounds like a severe case of separation anxiety. It also sounds like she can't tolerate a crate. I'm not sure anyone knows why, but there are some dogs who can't.

I have an article on Separation Anxiety, alphetized by that title in the Canine Behavior Series, link below my name. It sounds like this girl is going to need a lot of help, including probably medication initially to help her calm down.
