Which dog food?

paulevi Jan 06, 2008 11:09 AM

I'm confused about which puppy food is the best for my dog. Angus is a Scotty/Yorkie mix. I posted this message in another dog forum but can't find it. I wanted it here. He's 17 wks old and 10 lbs. I switched brands because his stool was a little soft. He poops often. I feed him half at 7 am and half at 4:30 or 5 pm. He's good in his crate at night for around 8 hours but then he becomes a pooping machine.

I personally do not like "Puppy" food. Puppy food in my opinion makes them grow to fast and sometimes can cause medical problems. I think what is best is a good brand of adult food. Look at the ingredients on the side of the bag. I always pick one that has the first ingredient meat. Corn and rice general are just fillers. Corn and Rice are ok in dog food but should not be the first listed. Have you checked with your vet for best food for your pup?

What type of medical problems can puppy food cause? I'm feeding him Science diet. It is an higher end food but whole ground corn is listed first then chicken by-product meat the soy etc...

The medical problems most commonly associated with puppy foods are orthapedic issues. It's not something that has been 100% confirmed, but if you look at large breed puppy studies, there is merit to the generalization. It can be countered by making sure the puppy isn't over eating, but it's a tough balance- too little food and you have problems as well. I think some brands of puppy food are better than others and address these growth spurt problems- so I would not equate Purina Puppy Chow with Wellness Puppy formula personally. Canidea is a brand that is for all life stages- I'd personally start my puppy with that food the next time I have a puppy.

I give him Science Diet. If you're from the States I'm not sure you'll know that brand as I don't recognize the one you mentioned. I'm in Canada. I am supposing the more meat in a food the better right? I give him a baby carrot once in awhile. I'd like to give him our meat once in awhile but am afraid he won't like anything else then.

If you are concerned aobut your dog getting picky about meals by giving him fresh meat, then have your dog work and do tricks or obedience commands for the really good meat protion of his meals. No one says meals have to come from a dog's bowl. Make it a reward. Smaller meals more frequently is alctually easier on a dog's stomach overall.

I do competitive agility with my dogs and weekends where we have trials, my dogs don't get fed their kibble from a bowl. Instead, I have it in a tupperwear and it's soaked in low salt chicken broth. After each run (there are about 5 runs a day), my dogs get a portion of their daily meal from the comntainer as well as some cheese cubes, hot dogs, bacon or eggs.

www.dogaware.com has a whole bunch of info about food, grading foods, and choosing foods for your dog. Read that site and make your own choices. It also gives availability as well- and since you are in Canada- Orijen dog food is made there and should be readily available if you want to go the kibble route.

My boy being a GSD / Dane mix was on Canidae as a puppy cuz danes cant have puppy food makes them grow to fast but the only thing about the Canidea was it made him poop a lot. I then changed him over to Wellness Fish and Sweet potato. Now my boy has allergys that Im trying to figure out what and the Wellness food helped with the pooping a lot but not his allergys so I will be changing it again. Im gonna be putting him on Natural Balance which I have talked with a few people here whos dogs are on it and love it. Remember to aways mix the new food in with the old stuff when changing food so it dosnt upset the puppys tummy.

I personally never liked Science diet. I had my dog on Nutro Natural choice for about seven years. Two years ago I switched her to Innova Evo. I think it is the best thing I could have done for her. Her fur is shinier, and she has a lot more energy. She also had arthritis that would make it hard for her to walk if she ran or swam to much. Now she doesn't seem to have this problem.

I think it depends on the dog what will work out best for them. My mom tried her dog on Innova and it just made her dog sick. I just like the idea of no grains in the food.

Having a Chesapeake Bay Retriever who are known for the skin allergy problems I also feed Evo. I have a border Collie too and they both love it and their coats are nice and shiny also. Their stools are nice and easy to pick up and they only go about 2 times a day.
