This is a long story (short version). Friends of ours found a Basset Hound (male) on a golf course in Southern Maryland. The dog has no collar, but did have a chip in the back of it's neck. The chip, was a breeder's chip, that basically said the dog is 5 years old and was born to a breeder in Kansas. The breeder was contacted, but was unable to identify the owner. After two weeks of trying to find it's owner, we agreed to adopt the dog. We named him Cooper (don't ask me why) it was my daughter's idea. We have taken the dog to the vet, and had him checked out, as well as bringing his shots up to date. He seems in good health. He has only had 1 accident in the house, and that was attributed to too much water , too late at night. He is very skinny, and the vet said he needs another 5 - 8 lbs. He has a slight thing going on in his ears, and the vet gave us some medicine to put in them and the massage it in. The first time we did this, he wasn't too crazy about it, but he let us do it. We did get some brown stuff out so it looks like it might be doing some good. He is very docile, and he groans alot, especially when stretching out while laying down. At first I couldn't tell if it was a groan or a growl. Also in 4 days I have heard the dog bark twice.
The drooling was expected, but the one thing that is taking some getting used to is the 'Hound' smell. Even after giving him a bath, he still smells. Is there a way to reduce the smell. It is a given that we are not used to having a dog in the house and we are proceeding along, kind of blind faith. He seems to be house broken, although I have not found out how he is going to tell us that he wants to go outside. My last dog (about 35 years ago) would go to the back door and bark, but this guy just lays around all day, sleeping.
Sorry for the length of the post.
Any pointer you can send my way would be greatly appreciated!
