Yeah, their definition of "most popular" is by the # registered with them each year. Let them start counting lab and GSD mixes and we'll see who comes out on top.

That's one way to look at it as the shiba is becoming less popular- unfortunately, with what I've seen in my area, its' not that they are less popular- instead they are being registered by other registries other than AKC. Shiba breeders are fairly good at using limited registration on their puppies that are supposed to be pet quality, but that doesn't actually force the dog to be altered. It just gives the dog papaers showing it's purebred so another registry has no issue giving a litter of puppies their registration #s.
