High protein levels

abukuchick Jan 21, 2008 03:13 PM

I have been feeding my Chihuahuas Innova Evo reduced fat formula which contains 52% protein and no grains. It is meant to mimic a raw food diet for those who cannot feed raw. I heard from a friend that her vet wanted her to switch her dog off of a high protein diet like this one due to a high risk of kidney problems. Is this something I should worry about or will they be ok on a food like this? Both have balanced out weight wise and are doing well on this food. They are 1 1/2 years old and have been eating it about 4 months or so. Any advice on this type of diet would be greatly appreciated.

A high protein diet does not cause kidney problems. If the kidneys are damaged so that kidney function is impaired, it may be difficult for the kidneys to handle the extra protein. A young dog like yours should have no problem with a high protein diet. This is still less protein on a dry weight basis than a wild canid would consume.

The vet is using old outdated information. The study that linked kidney damage to high levels of protein was never done on dogs or cats, but instead on rats who are completely different animals physiologically speaking.

I am SO glad to hear it! I am amazed by the difference this diet has made in both my dogs, especially in my little guy with luxating patellas. We were at my parents house and he was running up and down stairs for three days with no problem, when we were there last September, he couldn't walk after 12 hours of steps. It's built up all his muscles and trimmed down the extra fat that was putting strain on those knees. Thank you SO much!
