New Doberman Puppy!

linnea Jan 28, 2008 01:31 PM

In 3 weeks, I'll be picking up my first PUPPY! I've had 2 dobes before, both adopted as adults, and this will be the first time I'm buying from a breeder, and getting one so young.

What size toys do I need to buy for it? He's tiny now (5 weeks) but how big will he be at 8 weeks? How quickly do they outgrow the "puppy-sized" toys?

For those of you who have had their ears cropped, how do you handle keeping them separated from the other dogs? Do you just keep them separate until the stitches come out, or do you wait until posting is finished?

If it's a male, he'll probably range from 15-20 lbs at 8 wks (on average). Females 12-15 lbs usually.

We usually keep cropped ears out of harms way (other dogs playing) until the stitches are removed. During posted times, playtime is kept at a minimum and as low key as possible (if possible that is).

Toys, get adult toys........WalMart has an awesome fire hydrant made of very tough rubber. My male has had his for almost 4 yrs now, and has not been able to destroy it, but has shredded 3 Kongs!!! Just keep medium-large breed dogs in mind when buying toys.

Good luck with your new addition. Come back and share pics when you get him/her.

Cool, I wasn't sure if I needed to get a bunch of smaller toys. I might pick up some smaller balls and a puppy kong, but I won't go overboard.

Here's a picture of the entire litter at 4 weeks (taken last sunday) Ours is the third from the left.
