kennel cough

Black_Wolf Feb 01, 2008 12:12 AM

Did some research online and it seems as though my dog has kennel cough. She's current on all her shots (rabies, distemper, bortetella, etc). She sounds like an old man coughing. anyways...
So the info online said that there's pretty much nothing a vet can do since it's a viral thing so obviously antibiotics won't work, and to let it run it's cousre
My question is can a dog be givin a diluted does of that MucinX stuff for kids to help her cough of the phylem?

Don't give a dog ANYTHING as a medication without first checking with your veterinarian. You would not believe how many dogs have died this way.

Actually, kennel cough can cause a bacterial infection as a complication, and it is wise to have your dog checked by a veterinarian in person. One thing they can do is take a white blood count to get a good idea of whether antibiotics would be likely to help.

Exactly- even though kennel cough in itself isn't all that serious and there's little taht can be done for it, getting the CORRECT diagnosis of it is very important. Coughing can be a sign of some serious conditions.

Our mixed breed dog was only 7 weeks old when we brought him home, he spread kennel cough (theres 2 versions, viral, and bacterial) to my Siberian husky.
Keep in mind both of mine are fed a completely raw diet. I treated them with a certain dosage of vitamin c, echinecea, and garlic. Both were completely over it in 4 days. You have to find the exact dosage, and keep the vet on call if this does not help. Usually kennel cough is just annoying, and messy. Keep them away from other peoples dogs until a few days with no symptoms at all have passed.
The vet did give me a cough suppressant which did the best to help with the home treatment to boost their immune system.
If needed the dog may need antibiotics to treat any secondary infections from the compromised immune system if it does not pass quickly.
