New owner of a Dogue De Bordeaux puppy

dragondavy Feb 15, 2008 07:14 PM

Hi
I am new to this side of the forum and I'm getting my daughter a Bordeaux pup at the end of this month. Me and my wife bought one for her for her birthday, but it's also for me and my wife. I had my best friend a 13 year old Pit bull passed away two years ago and we needed that kinda love back in our lives and family. Kaylin was an awesome pit bull with lots of love for us and everyone who met him and he was able to spend 9 months with my daughter a new born at the time before he passed away, RIP Kay my boy, you will always be with me. I got him tattoo on my chest so I can always have him by me.

Now my daughter is two years old and all she wanted for her birthday was a puppy, thats all that came out her mouth, puppy puppy puppy.lol

So we looked around the net to learn a little about them and to see where we could buy one. We were going to have one shipped to us but me and my wife decided to try and find a breeder close to us so we can see the puppies. We found a pretty cool breeder about 2.5 hours from us so we gave them a call and set a date and time up to go see the pups. We went over to see the pups and me my daughter and my wife picked out this cute little boy with a little white on the chest, well, we really let the little one pick him out and she did a great job on it because we all fell in love with him.

We couldn't take him home because they are a little over 4 weeks at the time so we put a down payment till we can see what the vet check comes out to be when they go to the vet this weekend. If the health checks out all good, then we pick him up on the 2nd of March and if the vet check comes out to be not so good we can get our down payment back or work something out. The pup comes with papers but the breeder said but he hasn't got them in yet and he don't know if they will be there in time when the pups are ready to go home and if all goes good with the vet. The breeder seems very cool and I have called him a few time since I left the down payment two weeks ago to ask him a few things about the pup and he has been so far down to earth. He had paper work for both his male and female and they were beautiful parents and were pretty cool around my two year old daughter, they were some big suckers.lol
He had three bordeaux, the parents of the pups and a fixed female, so I know he is a small breeder.
What should I have the vet check the pup for to make sure he is in good health and grows up to be in top shape? I have a week to get him checked out by my vet to make sure all is good.

I also wanted to know what are some good vitamins for these big boys bones?
Is there anyway to find Bordeaux clubs around me?
What are some good books to buy on this breed?
What are some good ways on working them out so they stay healthy?

I might want to show him, if I can, I never done it , but I would love to learn.
Can a person show a dog only a few times if they want?

What can I do for now to teach the dog?

Can some owners post pic's of your Dogue De bordeaux?
I would love to see them all, puppies and the big boys & Girls.

Thanks for everything and I hope to meet some cool owners on here.

Take care

Congrats on your new puppy! I do hope all works out for you. I will try to address your questions, but overall there are a lot of them and your new puppy's breeder shoudl be able to poitn you in the right direction for most if not all of the answers.

>> I also wanted to know what are some good vitamins for these big boys bones?
-I make sure I'm feeding a really good quality diet. If you believe a kibble diet is the way to go, then find a brand that pays attention to high quality ingredients and does not use cheap plant based fillers for their protein sources.

>>Is there anyway to find Bordeaux clubs around me?
I would try the United Kennel Club and go from there. I'm not sure the American Kennel CLub has accepted the DDB fully into registration yet.

>> What are some good books to buy on this breed?
Anything about the breed will be helpful to you so just go to Amazon.com and look search there. Most books have reviews so you can get a good idea if its' decent or not.

>> What are some good ways on working them out so they stay healthy?
My dogs get long walks and runs next to me on my bike. Can't do the hard running with a puppy though. Keep it to nice long low impact walks and work up to backpacking, carting, hiking, pretty much anything you want.

>> Can a person show a dog only a few times if they want?
Simple answer to that is yes, but the dog's breeder should be able to tell you if the dog is show quailty or not. Also, if you plan on showing in comformation you can't alter the dog so you are going to have to deal with the issues of having an intact animal in the house. Not always behaviors you want around young children.

Find puppy classes and take your dog to them and then do the homework in 5 minute sessions 4 or more times a day. Keep training fun, enjoyable, and rewarding and the possibilities are endless on what you can teach this pup.

I only deal with them at shows so hopefully someone else can come along and help you out there. Here's a link from a show that had them attending:

Congrats on the mew pup.

There is a national breed club, you can check them out at www.DDBS.org They have lots of good information on the breed and it's health issues, longevity etc.

The DDB is AKC foundation stock showing in the Misc class at this time. Starting July 1, 2008 they will be fully recognized by AKC and moved into the Working Group. In order for you to show your dog it will need a 3 generation AKC pedigree.

Your breeder should have given you a contract that covers what guarantees they have on health matters - things like hip and elbow dyslplasia, heart problems, bite issues and other gentically inherited health issues.

if you have a borders close by, you can save on books by ordering the chosen books from borders, you don't have to pay shipping but you have to pick it up at the store. hope this helps.
