training, help!!!!!

cutefyorkie Feb 25, 2008 07:52 AM

We just brought home our new puppy this thursday. She is a 12 week old yorkie. We are crate training her as well as potty training. Can anyone help us with a good schedule? When to feed ? Is it ok to play with her if she hasn't gone potty ? We have been taking her out of her crate to potty at least every 2 hours. If she dosent go when we had her out we put her back in her crate , and try again in 15 -20 min. sometimes i find she has messed in her crate after only a couple of minutes after we had her out to potty.Ive read about making her crate smaller with a barrier inside so i guess thats where im going to start. we really want to do everything right. If you had a schedule that worked for your puppy , Please share it with us.

I want to also mention, due to the snow , we are using newspapers to potty train, and she will potty on them when we make her stay there when we know she has to go . but if we dont keep her there she will potty wherever she wants.
here are the main questions we have.
how often can we have her out to play if she hasnt pottied first?
how often ? what times are best to feed her?
how long , how often should we spend teaching her other commands? like sit , stay , etc.
thank you very much in advance for any help .

Give her opportunity to potty in a correct place at least once per hour. This is a good rule for any dog until the habit is formed, and even more so for a Yorkie.

Do not give her access to areas where she could have accidents except when you are directly supervising her and can help her get it right. Do not punish for accidents, of course. But remember, she is tiny and does not need your whole dwelling to run around in--especially when she's not yet housetrained.

Take her to a puppy class as soon as your veterinarian says it's okay with her immune status. This is very, very valuable time that passes very quickly. Training of a puppy that age--and really, it works for any age--works well in short sessions with positive methods.

Be sure to read some of the articles on Housetraining (alphabetically under "H" at the link with my signature. You will find lots of other helpful information there, too.

Thank you for your response, she is doing better already. We have even taught her to sit. Thanks again

Looks like you're getting good advice! I took my puppy out every 45 minutes (except at night) when she was really small, and she was trained very quickly. After she was trained (within a couple days, we still went out regularly, but not as much). I fed her two times a day (morning and late afternoon) and took her out 15 minutes after each feeding, right after she came out of her crate, and after each playtime. We'd love to see pictures of your puppy!
