Housetraining blah

giglz15 Mar 04, 2008 01:15 PM

I have a 4 month old Boston Terrier. He has been the worse dog I have ever owned for housetraining. He pees in his crate. Its not to big or too small. He sleeps in it at night. I am home all day. I leash him to me in the day so I can watch him and let him go out several times per day and per night. I have taken everything out of his kennel he still pees in it and lays in the pee. He does not care if he is dirty or not. He just isn't getting the connection that inside the house and in the crate are bad places to pee. He does not deficate in the kennel but will poop on the floor. If you try and praise him while he is outside he stops going. I am at my wits end. Its been 2 months almost and he still has no clue. He does not have any health problems he has been seen by the vet. I only punish him when I catch him in the act which is often since he is on a leash all the time. I am sick of cleaning up pee. Its an everyday thing. I let him out almost 3 times PER night and countless times in the day. He does not let me know when he has to go. He just goes. Any tips?

Punishment will NOT help, and could well cause new problems. Read the articles filed alphabetically under "Housetraining" at the link with my signature (all of them are free, of course). Stop using the crate for at least a week, probably better at least 2 weeks. Use a small room with a baby-gated doorway instead.

Also clean with the products mentioned in the articles--other products are not likely to work, and the scent confuses him, even if you can't smell it.

It also sounds like further veterinary checking is in order. There could be something causing this to happen.

Start with the Housetraining Basics article, and also read others, especially the one for small dogs. All start with the word "Housetraining," and are listed alphabetically at that link by title. It will tell you how to do it.
